Rutger Roeffhake sells an annual grain rent from his house and farmstead to the church of Bochum

In 1475, Rutger Roeffhake and his wife Yde sold an annual grain rent to the church of Bochum, secured on their house, farmstead, and all associated hereditary property within the town. The rent consisted of one malder of good, clean grain, half rye and half barley, to be delivered yearly as a perpetual memorial foundation. The charter lists several witnesses, including Johann Springorum, and was sealed by Rutger Roeffhake himself.

Wy, Rutger Roeffhake ind Yde, syn echte husfrouwe, doen kunt, dat wy umb ene summe geldes, dey ons wol betalt is, hebben verkofft den sementliken presteren der kerken to Bochum ind eren nakonielingen jarlix een malder gudes, klaren, harden schultkarns, halff rogge ind halff gerste, Bockemscher maten, uyt onsem huse ind hove, binnen Bochum gelegen, ind vort uyt allen onsen sementliken erben ind guderen, to eyner ewijgen memorien, na lude eynes anderen breyffs, dey vronnisseheren in deyselven kerken hebben sollen, welker vorscr. malder korns wy jekliks betalen sollen, so wanner dey vorscr. Yde, myn echte husfrouwe, na dem wyllen Godes vorscheiden is.

Dyss to getynghe der warheyt so heb ik, Rutger Roeffhake vorscr., myn segel an dyssem breyve gehangen.

English Translation

We, Rutger Roeffhake and Yde, his lawful wife, hereby make known that for a sum of money, which has been fully paid to us, we have sold to the spiritual benefice holders of the church of Bochum and to their successors an annual rent of one malder of good, clean, hard grain, half rye and half barley, measured according to the Bochum measure, from our house and farmstead situated within Bochum, and furthermore from all our hereditary lands and properties, as a perpetual memorial foundation, according to the terms of another charter which the administrators of the same church shall hold, which said malder of grain we are obliged to pay yearly, for as long as the said Yde, my lawful wife, lives according to God’s will.

And in testimony of this truth I, the aforesaid Rutger Roeffhake, have affixed my seal to this charter.

Present at this transaction and payment were, namely, Frederich Narthus, Johann Springorum, Gert op dem Keller,and many other worthy people.

Given in the year of our Lord one thousand four hundred seventy-five, on the holy eve of Pentecost.
