Settlement concerning a debt between Stine tom Putte and Hermann Puttman

On 24 April 1486, a legal settlement was concluded before clerical and civic representatives concerning a debt of 35 Rhenish guilders owed by the late Gerd Puttman to his sister Stine tom Putte. The agreement required Hermann Puttman, Gerd’s son, to pay an annual grain rent of nine scheffels—half rye and half barley—from land at the Cruceacker near Altenbochum, with provisions for redemption and distraint in case of default. The charter was witnessed by several officials, among them Johann Springorum, and illustrates late medieval practices of securing monetary obligations through agricultural rents.

(18) Vor Magister Johann von Galen, Pastor, dem Rentmeister Wessel Paschendael (Passchendaell), Wennemar Paschendael und Johann Springorum (Spryngorum) schließen Stine tom Putte auf der einen sowie Hermann, ein Sohn von Stines Bruder Gerd Puttman, und sein Vormund, der Bochumer Priester Wessel Bomeken auf der anderen Seite einen Vergleich, wegen 35 rheinischen Gulden, die Gert Puttman seiner Schwester Stine schuldig war. Es wird beschlossen, dass Hermann an Stine eine jährliche Rente von neun Scheffeln harten Schultkorns, halb Roggen und halb Gerste, aus neun Scheffelsaat vom Cruce acker, die Dietrich Vryman zu Altenbochum bewirtschaftet, am St. Martinstag (11. November) zahlt. Er erhält ein Wiederkaufsrecht, das er an Cathedra Petri (22. Februar) bzw. acht Tage davor oder danach wahrnehmen kann. Stine erhält ein Pfändungsrecht im Falle des Ausbleibens der Jahrrente und außerdem das Wiederkaufsrecht an Gert Puttmanns Erbland aus der Willekenshufe. Wessel Paschendael kündigt sein Siegel an.
