Translation

I, Adrian Berswordt, make known and declare by means of this my letter of enfeoffment, that I have received as a fief from the venerable and beloved lord, Lord Johann, Abbot of the Foundation of St. Gertrud in Werden, in the right of service and for the benefit and in the name of my brother, my mother’s and the late Johann Schryver’s legitimate son from Werden, who is currently abroad. The following goods are hereby described:

The forecourt in Hunthamme, located in the parish of Bochum, and all its appurtenances, as well as the rights to the house and dwelling called Heyge near Werden, which the aforementioned late Johann Schryver’s father had lawfully purchased from Hinrich van der Hove and Heinrich van Eickel of Sevinghausen.

The house and estate in Beenssem, including the house, barn, garden, and all appurtenances, as well as the two fields at Steinhove, located within and outside Werden, which the aforementioned late Johann Schryver’s father and all aforementioned had lawfully purchased for himself and his heirs from the late Johann van der Lippe and his heirs.

To the aforementioned Johann Schryver’s son, for his right, to the venerable lord aforementioned and his foundation, to honor, right, and authority of his right therein undiminished.

If the aforementioned Johann Schryver’s son should die without heirs outside the country, the heirs within eternity shall and may appoint one from the other children of the late Johann Schryver, without any compensation or deceit.

When the young Johann Schryver returns to the country, then Adrian shall surrender this fief to him or our descendants, and Johann shall receive it. For this, I, Adrian, have pledged to the venerable lord aforementioned, and have sworn an oath, to remain loyal and to do as a vassal is duty-bound and obligated to do to his lord, without deceit.

Present and witnessing this fiefdom were the honorable and pious Lutter Stael, Unncetius van Eickel, and furthermore the worthy Lord Johann Wittenhorst, pastor at Borne at that time, Johann Bungart, Johann Kockenbecker, and servants.

In testimony of the truth, I, Adrian Berswordt, have affixed my seal to this letter in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and thirty-eight.
