Jacob Alers and Catharina establish a grain and money rent in favour of Pastor Heinrich Stoitt

In 1576, Jacob Alers and his wife Catharina sold a redeemable annual annuity to Pastor Heinrich Stoitt of Harpen. The annuity consisted of two scheffel of rye, measured according to the Bochum standard, and half a Reichstaler. The capital sum of 22 Thaler could be redeemed within four years, while the buyer or his heirs retained the right to terminate the arrangement. The transaction renewed an earlier loan relationship dating back to 1571 and was secured on the couple’s house and associated property near the churchyard on Bergstraße in Bochum.

This charter documents a common early-modern credit and annuity arrangement (Rentenverkauf), combining payment in kind (grain) with cash interest. The total capital involved amounted to 22 Thaler, accumulated through several loans granted by Pastor Stoitt since 1571.

(1863) Jacob Alers und Catharina, seine Frau, verkaufen dem Heinrich Stoitt, Pastor zu Harpen, eine Jahrrente von 2 Scheffel Roggen, Bochumer Maß, und 1/2 Reichsthaler ("von verthein schillinge Dortmundiss"). Rückkauf der Rente mit 22 Thalern innerhalb 4 Jahren vorbehalten; auch können di Käufer, d.i. der Pastor resp. dessen Erben, das Kapital kündigen. Im Jahre 1571 hatte obiger Pastor denselben Eheleuten 11 Thaler geliehen und dafür der Eheleute "huiss u. semptliche Stedde" d.h. deren "Erffnuss vur dem Kerckhoeve ahn der Berckstratten binnen Bouchum gelegen" verschrieben erhalten. Jetzt liehen die Eheleute noch 10 Thaler, dazu waren sie 1 Reichsthaler Rente noch schuldig und so betrug jetzt ihre Schuld an den Pastor 22 Thaler, wofür sie ihm jetzt obige Rente zahlen und wieder obiges Unterpfand setzen.
