On this day, the fourth of May 1652, at about half past one in the afternoon, there appeared before me, Hendrick Schaef, notary, etc., and the undersigned witnesses, Jacob Sprinckhooren of Hamburg, sailing as a ship’s mate aboard the ship De Groote Liefde, in the service of the Lords Directors here in Amsterdam. He declared and acknowledged, for himself and his heirs, to be lawfully and properly indebted to Grietgen Henricxdr., acting as the presenter of this deed on behalf of Carsten Jansz, in the sum of eighty-nine guilders and four stuivers.

This debt concerns consumed living expenses and monies advanced and disbursed, both for his outfitting for this voyage and otherwise, which he has enjoyed and received to his satisfaction. He therefore requests that the said sum be paid from the first and earliest wages, monthly pay, and prize money to be earned by him, and for this purpose assigns and pledges the same thereto, transferring, ceding, and conveying all rights relating to the said sum to her by these presents. All this is done under obligation and pledge, etc.

All of this was duly done in Amsterdam, in the presence of Reijnoult Junge of Lübeck, with whom the appearing party was lodging, also a seaman, who declared that he knew the appearing party well and that he was indeed the same; and Jochum Wachter, as witnesses requested thereto. This assignment applies both to the present voyage and to all other voyages, no services or voyages being excepted, until full and effective payment has been made.
