Hendrik Schermer authorizes Barend Springorum to collect a legacy prior to his departure for CuraƧao.

On 19 January 1782, Hendrik Schermer appeared before an Amsterdam notary to grant Barend Springorum a power of attorney shortly before departing for CuraƧao aboard the ship De Triton. Springorum was authorized to claim and receive a legacy of 300 guilders bequeathed to Schermer under a testament of 1769. The act ensured that the inheritance could be lawfully collected in Schermer’s absence.

Compareerde voor mij Anthony Mylius, Notaris en Translateur, bij den Hove van Holland en door de Ed: groot Achtb: Heeren Burgemeesteren en Regeerders der stad Amsteldam, behoorlijk aangesteld, geadmitteerd en beƫdigd, te Amsteldam resideerende, en voor de natenoemene getuigen.

DE Hendrik Schermer, Meerderjarig Jongman, zijnde thans binnen deeze stad, doch staande op zijn vertrek om met het schip genaamd de Triton, gevoerd wordende door Capn. J: F: van der Biest, van hier naar CuraƧao te Navigeeren.

En verklaarde hij comparant bij dezen te constitueeren en magtig te maken DE Barend Springorum, woonachtig in de opgaande zon in de Binnen Brouwersstraat binnen deeze stad, specialijk, omme voor en in den naam van hem comparant, en ten zijnen behoeven, van den Heer Martinus de Neff, als vermits het overlijden van Johannes Menting, Eenige Overgeblevene Executeur van den Testamente van Geertruij Schermer en Barend Schermer, te eijsschen, vorderen en ontfangen zodanige somma van Drie Honderd Guldens, als aan hem comparant bij het zelve Testament, het welk op den 29e Augustus des Jaars 1769 ten overstaan van den Notaris Gerardus Wijthoff en getuigen alhier gepasseerd, door den Langstleevende van de genoemde Testanten, zijnde geweest Geertruij Schermer, is gelegateerd geworden;

voor den ontfangst van dien te quiteeren, en voor namaninge te laveeren, en voorts dien aangaande alles verder en meerder te doen en verrigten, wat ter voorschreeve zake mogt worden vereischt, en hij comparant zelve present zijnde, zoude kunnen, mogen of moeten doen; alles met belofte van approbatie en ratificatie, mitsgaders des noods met macht van Substitutie, onder verband als naar rechten.

English Translation

Appeared before me Anthony Mylius, Notary and Translator at the Court of Holland, duly appointed, admitted, and sworn by the Right Honourable Lords Burgomasters and Governors of the City of Amsterdam, residing in Amsterdam, and in the presence of the hereinafter named witnesses.

Hendrik Schermer, an adult unmarried man, presently within this city, but about to depart in order to sail from here to CuraƧao aboard the ship called the Triton, commanded by Captain J. F. van der Biest.

And the said appearing party declared by these presents to constitute and empower Barend Springorum, residing on the east side of the Binnen Brouwersstraat within this city, specially and expressly, to demand and receive, in the name and on behalf of him the appearing party and for his benefit, from the Honourable Martinus de Neff, as by reason of the death of Johannes Menting the sole surviving executor of the testament of Geertruij Schermer and Barend Schermer, to claim and receive such sum of Three Hundred Guilders as was bequeathed to him the appearing party under the said testament, which was executed on the 29th of August in the year 1769 before the notary Gerardus Wijthoff and witnesses in this city, by the survivor of the said testators, being Geertruij Schermer.

For the receipt thereof to give full discharge, to pursue due demand, and furthermore in relation thereto to do and perform all such further and additional acts as might be required in the aforesaid matter, and which he the appearing party himself, if personally present, could, might, or ought to do; all with promise of approval and ratification, and moreover, if need be, with power of substitution, under obligation as by law.

Passed in Amsterdam in the presence of Fredrik Joseph Mathieu and Jan Stadelaar, as witnesses.
