Grocer in Amsterdam

Joan Wilhelm (Willem) Springorum (1744 – ?) followed his brother Barend from Henrichenburg to Amsterdam, where he appears to have worked in the grocery trade and built a life within the city’s urban community. He and his wife had eight children, three of whom died at a very young age, while the youngest reached the age of twenty-three. Most of the surviving children gradually disappear from the records with one clear exception: Gerrit, who continued the Springorum line in Amsterdam. In contrast to his brother’s maritime career, Willem’s story reflects a more settled but fragmentary presence in eighteenth-century Amsterdam, where the family name endured through a single surviving branch.

Baptism of Willem Springorum

23 November 1744 · Henrichenburg, Deutschland

Joan Wilm (Willem) Springorum, the legitimate son of Johann Joseph Springorum and his wife Anna Maria Stratmans, was born on 21 November 1744 and baptized two days later, on 23 November 1744, in the parish church of St. Lambertus in Henrichenburg.

The baptism was recorded in the parish register, naming Jan Willem Strakhausen and Anna Springmühler as godparents. This entry confirms Willem’s place within the Henrichenburg branch of the Springorum family and provides firm documentary evidence of the family’s continued presence in the parish during the mid-18th century.

Deed of Renunciation by Christina Boom

10 August 1773 · Amsterdam, Nederland

The name Willem Springorum was found in a notarial deed dated 1773, in which an adult daughter of Willem Springorum formally renounced all present and future claims to his estate. This document cannot relate to Willem Springorum born in 1744, as he was only 28 years old at the time and could not have had a legally adult daughter. The Willem mentioned in this deed must therefore belong to an earlier generation and represents a different namesake.

On 10 August 1773, a notarial deed was executed in Amsterdam in which Christina Boom, an adult daughter of Willem Springorum, voluntarily and irrevocably renounced all present and future rights, claims, and entitlements to her father’s estate. The act, drawn up by notary Jan Bentelaan, explicitly states that the renunciation was made of her own free will, without coercion or compensation, and was intended to prevent any later claims upon the inheritance. Willem Springorum was present at the execution of the deed, which was witnessed by Hendrick Lyssen.

Baptism of Joanna Springorum

2 April 1783 · Amsterdam, Nederland

The presence of Willem Springorum as a baptismal witness raises the possibility that Joanna was named after her uncle Joan Wilhelm, but this cannot be stated with certainty.

On 2 April 1783, Joanna Springorum was baptized in Amsterdam in the church known as De Posthoorn. She was recorded as the daughter of Barend Springorum and Willemina Altmans. The baptism was witnessed by Barend's brother Willem Springorum and his wife Petronella Weijers, whose presence reflects close family and social ties.
